unwatchable > E36-Latitude

? I was confused about this part of the show. You seemed to be talking about some other app that integrates with GoogleMaps and uses a bit of Latitude to post your location. But not mentioning Google latitude has done this for ages.

? What? Google Latitude as does this for over a year. I think it might be because I think on the web it appeared to be a US app only, if I remember right. But I used Google Latitude on my E71 for over a year (well had it available). You'd turn it on, it would find your location and post a little pin point on Google map. You could update it manually or have it update automatically every few mins. I use to use it to watch my map on his way to work travel through London :)

I got bored of it so don't use it anymore but it was quite useful.

Regarding companies using it. You know they will be looking at it, as it would be a useful tool for them. They may also be able to get away with it, if they right it into the T&C of using their work phones. However, it might be classed as void, the T&C under the EU human rights thing. Would probably be useful as a tracker if your phone got stolen though I guess. A very, very basic tracker.

I think the UK should ditch the EU, get rid of immigrants and go back to the good ol' days of coal mining and steel works. Then business could track their employees, we wouldn't have annoying microsoft updates to keep on the "sweet side" (if there is one) of the cushy EU. Look at switzerland! They're not EU and they seem to be getting along fine!

Anyway, the latitude thing sounds quite good if you get lost in a large town as you could see where you are meant to be going on Google Maps and where you actually went.

Switzerland is fudged into the EU via the EFTA and a series of treaties. In away every european country has to accept the EU to some degree or under a different label for trade and governance certain industries for example farming. On a sightly different note even the UK a no-Euro country is forced to stabilise its value in order to trade every country relies heavily on exports.

Google Latitude.

Yeah there a quite a few popping up location based socal networking or social GPS as its refereed to is the new social networking frenzy of 2010/11. Foursquare is the new twitter apparently.

I can't stand Twitter. I share a lot of opinions with Nick on it. As for Facebook, I don't mind it, but then again, I'm a teen and everyone has facebook, msn etc... not many have twitter though.

Oh, an update on the laptop front (not wishing to bring this off-topic in my usual fashion)- I skyped (yes it works now) my Dad today and showed him the problem on the webcam, within 2 seconds he went:

"Oh, the graphics card's become dislodged. It just needs sticking back down. I'll take a look when I'm back home"

I replied "I've spent ages trawling the internet to find that out and was about to tell you."

So, I don't know if he has had this problem with another laptop (I know his work uses HP laptops).

As for Google Latitude, I like Su-Fay's friend tracking thing, because the number of times I've had mates say "Oh, I was only in the shop next door" when we have completely missed each other.

I think Nicky and Su-Fay should develop an "APP" (I hate that word) for friend-tracking... they could make millions of squids!

Yeah, remember we are ignorant Apple iPhone users, shielded from background updates until recently. Also to be honest i haven't tried latitude until after the podcast, didn't realise it did such a good job of pinpointing your location via the web.
